Who Deserves Our Gratitude For Inventing The Automobile And The Auto Shipping Industry?

By T Kearns

We are asked to be grateful for what we have on many occasions. We tend to take many of the happenings in our lives for granted for a variety of reasons. Maybe it?s health or wealth and perhaps something intangible such as peace. Many cultures respect their ancestors and elders and revere them. Preserving traditions and remembering past events can serve many of us well in our lives.

Where we come from shapes who we are and molds us into what we will become. Like humans, objects need to find a starting point to grow from as well. Beginning from the mind and a melting of materials, the utensils and machinery of today were once just visions and dreams. One such invention that we owe a great deal of gratitude towards is the automobile. Without cars our lives might be much less enhanced and much more inconvenient.

It is no secret that cars have played a tremendous part in the development of the world?s societies and have given birth to a number of ancillary businesses. The more imagination that was put into an automobile and its production the greater became the demand for relocating that car along with its owner.

Auto carrying today is as just as much a part of the car vocabulary as car warranties, leasing and insurance. No matter how competitive the industry, the demand for transporting automobiles is as strong as ever. There are always new obstacles and challenges, but learning from past history has given rise to a better future for the auto transportation industry. A review of the history of automobiles and its production advances will give us a window into the history of the auto shipping industry and how it became the business we know today.

Many believe that the concept of the car formed years before Henry Ford was born. One of the earliest car plans was attributed to Ferdinand Verbiest in the late 1600?s and then again to Leonty Shamshurenkov in the mid 1700?s. These versions were only remotely akin to the vehicles we know now. These early auto pioneers used engines powered by steam with one version using a human propelled rolling machine. The car was truly in its infancy if not in utero. Later, in 1801, Richard Trevithick invented a steam-powered road car called the ?Puffing Devil.?

Cars were now on their way to becoming a tool of the masses, hence giving a boost to the auto shipping industry. Karl Benz is probably the person most responsible for the automobile as we know it. In 1885, he built his first ?Motorwagen? and with it, car transportation services became much more of a reality. The many advances in car technology made after the motorwagen meant the demand for shipping these vehicles was waiting in the wings. Following is a peek at how some of the improvements in car production led to the expertise in the auto shipping industry as well.

The ability to manufacturer large quantities of cars produced on an assembly line was first introduced by Ransom Olds at his Oldsmobile factory in 1902. By 1914 Henry Ford was taking Olds original production patterns and vastly expanding on them. Working on very specialized tasks in a safe and fair environment allowed Ford?s workers to pave the way for automobile building success. As the efficiencies of cars began to accumulate in the United States the rest of the world started to take notice.

Now that the automobile had the world?s attention, Citroen, in 1921, became the first European factory to take up the assembly line method of manufacturing. Now many of the car manufacturers wherever based, needed a way to ship their newly manufactured vehicles. With the innovation of electric ignitions, electric self starters, independent suspension and four-wheel brakes, it was now possible for cars to be in the hands of people of more modest means than ever before. With the rise in the importance of the automobile, came the rise in the auto shipping industry ? a natural development. Now cars were showing up all over the world as a result of efficient auto shipping.

Obviously there would never have been a need to transport cars without the invention and mass appeal of the automobile. It is not so obvious, though, as to how much gratitude should be showered on the pioneers of the auto shipping industry. It is difficult to place a value on any specific car accomplishment, but with following the history of the automobile and the industries that sprang up around it , we can at least gain some insight as to how life changing the invention of the automobile really was and how much it deserves worldwide respect and appreciation.

Cars are lovely, useful machines and when they can be delivered to us in a timely, efficient, affordable and secure way, we must praise those forerunners of auto shipping that made this all possible. Knowing where you came from is a great way to celebrate your heritage. Those involved in the auto and the auto shipping industries would be wise to take this to heart and acknowledge and revere their fascinating history.
