Surgical Skin Tightening May Be A Risky Proposition

Submitted by: Valerie Rosenbaum

Surgical skin tightening procedures include the rhytidectomy or face lift, the browplasty or forehead lift and the midface lift. Injections containing collagen, hyaluronic acid or synthetic fillers are also used.

New treatments include the use of lasers and heat to stimulate the body to produce more collagen, the protein that makes up the majority of the elastic fibers, which are responsible for the skin s natural firmness or tightness.

Chemical peels are also used to minimize the appearance of some fine lines and to rid the face of certain other signs of aging. Initially, the peels make the face look tighter, firmer and smoother.

The costs of the procedures vary, depending on the type and the complexity. Other factors affecting price include the location of the cosmetic surgeon. Costs are higher in major metropolises; lower in small towns and out-of-the-way locations.

Botox is sometimes used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles around the eyes and on the forehead. It does not actually lift or make the skin tighter. It relaxes tiny facial muscles, making wrinkles less visible. The result is a somewhat smoother look.

All surgical skin tightening procedures are temporary. How long they last varies from a few months to a few years. Repeat procedures are often desirable, but sometimes impossible, depending on how much lift was done in the first place.

Most doctors advise their patients to avoid behaviors that could shorten the lifespan of the results. For example, patients are advised to use caution in the sun and avoid cigarette smoke. When they expect to be in the sun, they are advised to use a good sun block.

All of the procedures are painful and not without risks. Permanent scarring is one of the more serious risks, but when it comes to Botox, it is important to be sure that the surgeon or technician is not using a black market product. A number of people had to be hospitalized for paralysis after receiving black market Botox.

Most surgical skin tightening procedures cause bruising. The injectable materials can clump beneath the skin and form hard nodules. Enzymes must be injected to break up the nodules, if that occurs. The area beneath the eyes is particularly sensitive. Most practitioners will not use injections in that area.

The lasers and heat treatments can cause burning. The chemical peels will cause increased sensitivity to the sun and wind. Because of inflammation caused by surgical skin tightening procedures, they can further degrade the elastic fibers, leading to a more aged appearance and additional sagging.

There is no reason to take the risks, if you don t want to. Research has proven that topically applied creams, when used on a regular basis can improve the skin s firmness by 40% over the course of 18 days.

There are nourishing ingredients that naturally boost the skin s collagen production. One of them is an active protein called Functional Keratin.

In other words, surgical skin tightening procedures are not your only options. You have safer choices that may be just as effective.
