How To Fight Your Food Cravings}

Submitted by: R Parker

Lots of people suffer from food cravings at some point. Craving is usually for a certain type of food or drink, not just something to satisfy your hunger. The most common foods people crave are candy, chocolate or something similar that will give your body sugar or carbohydrates. It could even be the craving for potato chips or a glass of wine.

Most people think that it is bad habits that are responsible for these types of cravings or that the person has poor will power. Thats not usually the case. Strong food cravings have biological reasons and to beat the food cravings we must try to understand the underlying reasons.

Reasons for food cravings

When ever were tried or feeling depressed our blood sugar level goes down and the body signals to the brain that it needs a boost. This usually results in a craving for sugar or carbohydrates. One of the causes for this behavior is our basic feel good hormone Serotonin. The condition of a low level of Serotonin and low level blood sugar go hand-in-hand. That is why whenever there are low levels of Serotonin; we get a craving for sweet food such as chocolates to make up for the shortage of sugar in the blood.

Unfortunately sugar or simple carbohydrates release only a temporary burst of Serotonin and when that has gone the craving return. This leads into a vicious circle.

Another reason is Adrenal Fatigue. When youre feeling stressed or run down or if you havent had sufficient sleep, youre probably suffering from adrenal fatigue. In extreme cases the condition Is called adrenal exhaustion. In todays world this health disorder is becoming more common, but unfortunately it is very rarely taken seriously.

When Adrenal Fatigue occurs the body sends a signal to the brain for a pick-me-up and youll get a craving for sugar, snacks or coffee etc. All of these making the problem worse.

People who are on a low fat, low carbohydrate diet or have been taking appetite suppressants for a long period of time also get food cravings. This is because theyve become partially resistant to insulin. On a normal diet blood sugar level is maintained stable by the action of insulin, insulin signals to the cells of the body to absorb glucose from the blood stream when necessary. Because of their insulin resistant condition, the cells do not respond to the signal and cannot get the glucose they require. This results in a distress signal to the brain asking for more carbohydrates or sugar.
