How Singing Lessons Help Sustain Your Voice While Dancing}

Submitted by: Sarah C. Tan

Observe professional singers. They not only sing, they give a total performance. In some ways they do some acting to project emotions. They dance or move along to the beat of the music. These elements complement the vocal techniques you learn from singing lessons.

Michael Jackson sweeps the stage with his moonwalk’. Jennifer Lopez hits the floor with her sexy dance grooves. Beyonc is fierce with her QueenB moves. It is truly amazing how these singers could dance and sing at the same time.

Dancing while singing makes your body work double time. Your throat, chest, and abdominal muscles are most active while you sing. With dancing, your limbs are on the move. Without skilled synchronization, you could miss a step, go out of tune, or gasp for air. Proper breathing is required especially when you have to sustain your voice while moving your body to the rhythm of the song.

How To Master The Art of Singing and Dancing At The Same Time:

Identify and choreograph the dance steps or body movements first. Listen to the song and find specific parts where you want to integrate dance steps or body movements.

Master the dance steps until you are confident enough to do it with your eyes closed, so to speak.

Memorize the lyrics and melody of the song. You should know it by heart. Specific lyrics and melody parts or transitions could serve as your cue in executing your movements.

Quietly hum the song first as you rehearse your body movements. Then gradually increase the volume of your voice.

Try doing performance-level’ movements with a full singing voice. Dance and sing it as if you are already performing onstage.

Evaluate your performance. Listen to your voice. Are there certain parts of the song where your voice falters? Are there particular phrases in the song where you struggle to catch your breath? Do you find it more difficult to sustain high notes as you move?

From here, you can apply the proper breathing techniques you have learned from your singing lessons. Practice your breathing in coordination with your singing and dance steps. Find strategic timing and phrases within the song where you can take quick, short, and long breaths.

Other Tips To Sing and Dance With Ease:

Choose a song that’s within your style and range. Make sure that you have the energy to sing the highest note in the song as you do your dance steps.

Avoid complicated movements on difficult parts of the song, especially the high notes.

Be creative. Come up with movement tricks’. Sing, sway, then strike a pose, or do a fancy step, stand or pose, then sing.

Exercise regularly to increase your body’s endurance. You need to sustain your energy levels while performing.

In singing lessons, you will learn vocal techniques that could power-up your vocal chords. At the same time, you will also learn showmanship techniques to complement your song. Dance steps or body movements are essential to singing upbeat songs. It gives your performance a wow’ factor.
